Mine was doing that, they upgraded my compensator to a SE one and it's much better now.

Bottom line, as the bike is designed, you shouldn't need a stronger starter with your mods....

As many have suggested, there could be several issues causing your problem. You have a good list of things to check....battery, connections, tune, ACRs, starter clutch, compensator, etc, etc, etc......

While a new, stronger starter may temporarily solve your problem (unless the problem is a bad starter clutch, then you will have accidentally fixed the problem) it will just mask what the core issue is... eventually the issue will rise to the top and maybe leave you stranded.

Better to fix it, then mask it....

My ‘12 does it more frequently if a try to start it in gear, much less in neutral.

Like someone else said, hit the starter button just a second before starting to bring the piston off compression stroke which is where it stopped when you shut it off last time. Only addresses the symptom, not the actual problem.

I checked my ignition tuning map the other day and applying -3 degrees to the top right 3 cells on the lowest rpm row is what cured the hard starts for me. It has no impact on performance since the ecm only uses these cells on startup.

I also start my '11 in neutral. Hit the start button as soon as I turn on the ignition, don't wait for the fuel pump to stop. I don't know why it helps, but it does. Also, 3 years seems to be the max for my Harley batteries. As soon as it consistently struggles at the hit, it's new battery time.

1) stock battery and two starter clutch replacements
2) new battery all well for a while.
3) bought new starter, rated stronger, it lasted one month, but way stronger. they would not sell me another one (China made bad batch)installed old starter. back to hard starts.
4) bought another new battery even though all tests said one year old one passed. That was 3 years ago and no more hard starts. get a new battery

The Starter Clutch is a weak link.

I have 10.5:1 compression and no compression releases what so ever, but I also put the HD 1.4 KW starter on it, a long time ago, and I have never had any problem whatsoever with hot starts but with my OEM starter I had a lot of problems.
