Default Tips on going to 1-1/4" bars

First, there are good videos on Youtube about doing this. What they don't include is some situations you might find yourself in. I have some tips on doing this on bikes with TBW:

1. If you buy bars that have 1" reduction at the clamp, then you won't have any issues unless you already have 1-1/4" bars from grip to grip. JP has spacers that you can use. The problem with 1" bars at the clamp is that you don't have as much room to pull the wires.

2. If you had 1" bars and you get bars that are 1-1/4" from grip to grip you will have to get clamps from HD that are 1-1/4" clamps. To get to the bolts that hole the original clamps easily, rotate your front wheel all the way to the side to get to the bolt. You can re-use the bolts that hold and that tighten the clamps.

3. The video that I saw does a good job of showing how to remove your control boards in the left and right hand controls.

4. When you follow the video you will be able to remove and re-pull the wires inside your new 1-1/4" bars without replacing them unless you are going to higher apes.

5. You pull one wire from each side from the slots at the hand controls. You pull the TBW wires from the center back to the grip. Drop some fishing line or some heavy string with a small nut tied to the end down the bar. Do these first. For the side that you are going to pull the TBW wires up from the center, tie and extra string on the first set of wires to the wire before you pull it. Use this string to pull your TBW wires back down to the center.

6. This is MUCH easier on 1-1/4" bars from grip to grip.

7. Clip on the control boards first. Then put on the grip. Then put the control board covers on securing the grips (unless yours are the stock glue ons on the left side so do the re-glue first). Make sure that you have the grips ALL the way on. Put the covers on over the grips. Finally, install the mirror/controls on up against the switch housings.

These tips, along with YouTube, will make your life much better!

Have fun.
