Cold Oil Change

The only way I'll do a cold oil change is if the alternative is NO oil change. You're doing at least a little good by doing it cold, but not enough to make it worth it, in my opinion. Making a mess is just part of the dealio...that's why I stock Gunk Original Formula, diesel oil, Simple Green, plenty of towels and rags, and make certain I pay the water bill on time.

The best I found is to put puppy training pads under the bike. They are absorbent and don’t leak through.
I still struggle in not having some spill from the filter no matter what i do. So, I just stuff rags under the filter, and let what wants to run out land on the puppy pad. Then it’s good timing to give the bike a good wash.

Changed oil on mine and wife's bike yesterday. Decided to do cold, never did before. Refill was maybe few ounces less than normal but he big plus was NO OIL FILTER MESS. Filter was empty. I change oil and filter often, not really worried about few ounces more of old oil left. Oil drained little slow but did filter and cleaned air cleaner while it drained. I might do it again this way.
Kicker was I bought new oil filter catcher, only got couple drops in it. LOL

Also, it's good practice to change the oil warm - get it circulating - especially if there's any chance of condensation in the cases. It's just good practice to change it warm.

so when you pulled the bike into the garage after a couple of hours riding, walked away from it for a week, where did that oil go? Wasn't it warm and viscous when it worked its way back to the oil pan? Did some capillary action cause it to migrate up into the inner cavities of the engine?
