Default Rear Shock Orientation

I picked up a set off take off shocks off a 2017 SGS to replace the air shocks on my 2013 SG. Can anyone tell me which end is up on the right side shock? I tried doing some searches, and read somewhere that some of them were installed upside down from the factory, but it still didn't really say which was correct.

Any help would be appreciated.

Presuming SGS means street glide special, and going by the 2016 online fische, the one with the adjustment **** goes on the left.

That said, I doubt it really makes any difference.

Yea, the one with the adjustment **** is on the left. What I don't know is on the right side which end of that shock mounts to the swingarm.

Doubt it matters. Service manual says one way, the instructions with the Premium shocks says the opposite.

If you have quick disconnect stuff make sure it clears the shock.

Mount the left one first with the adjustment ****. Then mount the right shock in the same orientation as the left. If the right shock is mounted upside down (opposite of the left), then the passenger backrest bracket and/or luggage rack will not fit correctly, if you decide to put one on. Some came upside down (as mine did on my 2015) from the factory, and I had to turn it right side up, and all was well. Other than for that purpose, the orientation of the shock for functionality shouldn't matter.

Some do come out of the factory upside down dozen hurt anything but will get in the way if your add saddle bag protectors they’ll have to be turn the proper way.

My 15 SGS came with the right side "upside down". Meaning when I added a detachable backrest I had to turn it over or there wasn't enough clearance for it. So as others have said it really doesn't make any difference which way it goes. But I now have the skinny end at the top.
