When you're ready, I suggest renting each one for a day and take them through their paces for comfort and handling out-of-the-box. Most dealers will apply the rental to the purchase.

I did this. I didn't buy from that dealer, but I think it cost me $160 or so for the weekend. That gave me time to ride it wherever, however I wanted, with windshield, without windshield, etc. Much better than doing a demo ride for ten minutes.

I know this thread is more than a month old, but thought I'd add one more reply with a few pics. I chose the RK for its versatility. You can literally go from Road King, to Street King, to Ultra King and everything in between in less than 5 minutes.

Not into the fairing and radio ect. and I'm sure it is nice to have. So I went with a road king.

That's an awesome setup. I'd considered quick detach tour pack and/or batwing but wasn't sure how much I'd actually use either. Am curious as to how often you feel it's worth the time/effort to switch things out, and what is the configuration you use "by default," or most often...?

Thanks man. Switching them out is really easy. Tour pack is quick detach so it just takes a few seconds to remove. The batwing I just have to loosen four bolts and it pops right off. Three or four minutes at the most to remove it.. I keep the batwing and tourpack on from Fall till Spring and for any long distance rides. In the summer I do a lot of around town riding so I'll remove them for the really hot months. Tour Pack and Batwing will be on more often than not, so I guess they'd be considered the default.. Its nice to have the option though.

Here are two good reasons for a Roadking:

The differences between mine and yours,

King tour pack
Soft lowers
Fangs
Saddle bag bars
Mini Foot boards for the misses.
8" LRS Light tint.
Tbags King windscreen bag

I concur with all you said and demonstrated. King Ultra, to naked King in 15 minutes and anywhere in between. Even sissy bar and rack for the Super T when the misses stays home and I am just cruising.

It really is just a natural progression from the '80 FLH, the '88 FLHS only it is more flexible now. Racks, tour boxes, fairings, screens, lowers are all QD.

I choice the Road King for flexibility, weight. Bare bones, my king is 731, the Ultra 870. My King with Reckless fairing and King Tour is 820. It has heated grips, ABS and cruise.

I've ridden both the ElectraGlide Ultra and the Road Glide Ultra in heavy rains. I don't think they offer any more protection than my King with National Cycle Hand guards and soft lowers. I ride in the rain and I keep riding. We don't pull over and wait for it to stop.
