Exactly what I thought with my 07, but the tech at H-D said if it happens mainly when it's hot.. not from a cold start, it's more likely the compensator. ... I know, "what the F is a compensator" It's a bit like a between the engine and the final drive. It is a bit of a design flaw that HD has been trying to fix if not eliminate through various replacement kit versions over the last many years.

With my bike as much as I thought it was the starter... only happens when I try to start it after all, it was this compensator thingie.

 

Mine was doing the same thing. Thankfully it was still under the warranty period. The starter and compensator was replaced with the upgraded parts and also had the inner primary bearings replaced.
