Sure, I'll try to make it short. And I apologize for hijacking the thread!
I like to work on bikes with projects of the "let's see if I can make that work" kind.
The '81was built from a 1981 FLT frame that had a straight front and a 2011 FLHT frame that was straight but had no neck. The overall geometry of the touring frames really hasn't changed since 1980. There are just enough changes to make retrofitting parts more difficult. The frame parts were cut precisely and welded together in a jig. I used a lot of parts I had collected over the years and bought half a salvaged 2010 FLHTCU and put it all together. Looks like an FLTRX. Mismatched rims because I didn't like how the bike handled with a 21" x 3.5" front wheel and tested a stock wheel at the time. I had this FrankenGlide inspected by State Patrol and registered it using my clean 1981 title.
The '80 FXWG is my first Harley and I held on to it. It's gone thru many changed but still looks like a somewhat customized FXWG. Matching numbers but the motor is mostly S&S and it has real brakes now.
The '03 FLHT had many changes and upgrades over the course of past decade starting with a Jim's 120 motor that turned 131 and Jim's 6-speed gears in a 5-speed case. I converted it from carb to EFI, put a '08-up fuel tank on, swing arm from a '08 CVO to run a wider tire, recently added cruise control.... Lots of other changes and I'm not done yet. Not much is left of the original parts of the bike the moco delivered. I had her down to the frame twice already. Gathering up '08 parts now to see if I can make the throttle by wire EFI and ABS work on this bike too.
I know, it's silly stuff but I enjoy doing it, it's like a big 3D puzzle.

I'm treading a similar path to your '03 FLHT with my 1990 FLHS, owned from new, but also not much left of the original! S&S 107", Baker DD6, recent 6 gallon tank, Ohlins front and rear suspension, 18" front SG wheel, 17" Deuce rear, Brembo brakes all round, later bags, etc. Not complete enough to take a meaningful photo just yet.

Wilco. Yes, all our vehicles have to go through the ritual of annual roadworthiness inspection, or MoT. MoT is Ministry of Transport, which we haven't had for decades, however the name still sticks!
