Frequency of oil changes....NOT ABOUT THE OIL
#51
Does no one else think like me that the unfiltered primary that has wear plates inside and cools the stator, lubes the primary chain and compensator needs a fluid change at least as often as engine oil?
I get little or no particles on the oil pan magnet but always have fine stuff on the primary plug.
For what it's worth, the transmission oil drains as clean as when put in new.

Like I said I go 3,6 and 10k normally. I ran a test this last time extending the change intervals. What I found is I'll stick to that mileage. At 52k I use no oil at all up to 3k. Between 3-4k I used 1/2 a quart. I changed the primary at 3k once and it looked like I just put it in. However at 7k it was a tad darker than I like. Also at 3,6 and 10k it helps keep everything clean.

im perplexed on the frequency of the primary by Harley. in my way of thinking, the primary should be changed more often than the other two holes. It gets the most contaminated with the clutch fiber plates. look at all three drain plug magnets. the primary always has the most crap on it. my crank and transmission have practicaly nothing on the magnet. Even if your oil hasnt broken down yet, it still has contaminants from things meshing together i change out my primary religiously every 3000 along with my crank. trans every 6k. i drain and just pour in 38 oz every time.
