WOW!!!! those are really disturbing photos. It just goes to show ya if the bag guards and engine guard were there the bike would not lay over that far.Unless of course she backed into it at 45mph then i don't believe the guards would have helped.

Not so much sacred but just very heavy. Beyond a mere mortal's strength to hold up if they start to go down.

I have seen pictures of a bike that was t-bone by a car and the bars saved the rider's legs.

I don't know the history of why the FLHs adopted them as part of the look. Probably just to protect the fibreglass bags that add $500s to a simple tip over.

As an aside, I once tore a BMW saddlebag off that was not protected by a bar while miscalculating a gap. Caught the edge of the front of it and ended up aving to replace it.

That was expensive too.

I thank my lucky stars that I keep mine on my steed. Dropped it a couple of times due to oil on the pavement and once on a dirt parking lot that was on a slight angle. Yup just small nicks on the underside of the crash bars. Thank you but no thanks Ill keep mine on. Just my 2 cents is all..

Hmm. Like I say, they don't put the rear ones or mustache bars on Specials, CVOs or the fared touring models.

Hey, can I post a lousy photo of my Evo? I can never get the shade right. Either there's glare or it's in shadow. This is the Mysterious Blue Pearl from '98:
