I have seen pictures of a bike that was t-bone by a car and the bars saved the rider's legs.
I don't know the history of why the FLHs adopted them as part of the look. Probably just to protect the fibreglass bags that add $500s to a simple tip over.
As an aside, I once tore a BMW saddlebag off that was not protected by a bar while miscalculating a gap. Caught the edge of the front of it and ended up aving to replace it.
That was expensive too.

I thank my lucky stars that I keep mine on my steed. Dropped it a couple of times due to oil on the pavement and once on a dirt parking lot that was on a slight angle. Yup just small nicks on the underside of the crash bars. Thank you but no thanks Ill keep mine on. Just my 2 cents is all..
