So, I hear you're getting a new engine?

It's so nice to be understood.

It won't be long now.

Well, thanks everyone for your input, suggestions, encouragement, and long distance friendship.

Here's the first ignition of the new T124. They'll heat cycle her a couple more times this afternoon, then I'll be putting the first 50 break-in miles on her (probably this evening). I'll change the oil tonight then hopefully get the first 500 this weekend.

Just read through the thread...

So how is the 124” after over a year of riding?

It's a lot of fun, for sure.

Last fall I had it in the shop for some routine maintenance -- 90,000 mile service, I think, but I'm not positive. They noticed some leaking around the base gaskets. S&S happily replaced the gaskets, but struggled somewhat with covering the labor. They ultimately did agree to cover the labor. The work that was done included new rings, and honing the cylinders. Before winter set in I got the first 500 miles of the new break in procedure finished. Over the winter I changed the oil and have a few early spring rides on the "new" new engine. I'm still in the ride "in a normal but conservative manner" stage for the next 500 miles.

Last summer the bike was a blast to ride. When you take "conservative" out of the riding equation, the fuel economy does diminish significantly. That really only becomes a problem with long-distance Iron Butt type touring where you're trying to maximize the distance between stops. So, for that application, I might recommend a more conservative motor, maybe the S&S T111. But for a really fun ride I think the 124 is hard to beat. The fun doesn't stop when you hit the kill switch either. People notice the motor. They ask about it, and it's one more fun thing to talk about when you're out on the road.
