Default Warranty Question

So I stopped at The local dealer to see if they would replace my ignition switch under warranty (key gets stuck when locking and unlocking). To my surprise, they are going to.

The weird thing is they want me to leave my bike with them until the switch comes in. He said it's a 5 day lead time, and can't order it until I leave the bike there.

When I asked him why they can't just order it and have me back in when it arrives, he said I could change my mind and not get it replaced, and he'd be stuck with a switch keyed to my bike. -- I asked him why the hell would I change my mind, the switch is broken and the replacement is free -- and he said it's their policy. Not sure why they are being so weird.

So my question is, is this normal? Should I go to a different dealer?

Im running out of time though, my warranty is up 9/29.

I don't know maybe you could offer a deposit in good faith. Holding the whole bike for ransom for five days seems a little extreme in my opinion.

Sounds strange to me. Over the years I have had a few warranty issue. the ordered the part set up and appointment repaired it. The only time I could see a real reason to leave it would be if riding it was a safety issue.

Thanks all for confirming that this unusual.

It was the service manager that told me this. I'm bringing my wheel and new tire in to them on Friday for them to mount and balance. I' think I'm going to tell them that I'll go somewhere else for the warranty repair.

With policies like that I wouldn't even take a wheel to them for a tire change.

BS.
Go somewhere else or wake him up.
How much does a freaking switch cost that he needs your bike for collateral.
Ridiculous.

I have avoided this dealer since they denied me warranty service the day after I picked up the bike. Left switch pack got flooded with heavy rain on my way home from buying the bike and stopped working. Since I didn't buy it there, they would not do my warranty claim.

Problem is that they are 10 min down the road from my house. Next closest dealer is 35 min away. (This is where I have been going, but they are booked past my warranty end date) - so I thought I've give the local another shot.

(I did give them a shot on the sale, but weren't even close on price and trade and would not budge)
