Broke mine on my 77 low rider back in 77. Rode into parking lots , circled till traffic was clear then pulled out and proceeded home. Also started in 1 st with me off seat then sat as it started pulling. LOL Made it home but started changing regularily to prevent recurrence. New cables shouldn't need lubing. People lube and end up causing more issues .

Don't understand how you couldn't shut down the engine either. Kill switch does a fine job, as does the ignition switch.
If I've actually got to stop without a clutch I usually kill the engine as I approach with the stop. I like to be in 1st gear on a bike, or neutral in a car.
For starting, I simply use the starter motor and get it going while lurching along in 1st gear. It's a bit rough on the starter motor, but usually they can do it.
Shifting a bike without a clutch is easy, it's a dog box, so as long as you're not under load, it'll shift easily. Cars and trucks are a little harder and I'll frequently grind a bit trying to match the engine rpm.
