Default Ultra Classis head pipes

My boy has a 89 ultra but in 06 it was upgraded to a Ultima motor. They also put V&H duals on it. He doesn't like it and wants to go to a 2-1-2 pipe set up with slip ons. Will any year head pipe (stock) work on this set up or do we need to look for specific years. We can find stock head pipes for a reasonable price but don't want to buy something that won't work. Any help would be greatly appreciated and thank you for reading.

The stock pipes up to 2008 will fit straight on, although they are not strictly a 2-1-2. I have a 2008 aftermarket system on my 1990 Glide. Some of the '07 stock pipes and all '08 have O2 ports, so will need blanks for your '89 bike.

Later spec genuine 2-1-2 pipes have been made to work by a few members, but they need some 'adjustments', as they don't simply bolt on. You may also find there are now aftermarket 2-1-2 sets, similar to '09 and later, available for our earlier bikes.

thank you. That motor has some really good power, and those pipes are stupid loud, need to get some back pressure going on so he can harness both of those and maybe get him a little better mileage a lot quieter.

so im the "boy" haha. But I just wanna make sure I am right I found a set of pipes off a 2015 and they won't fit up on my 89. But is it as simple as just needing some spacers and tweaking it some or is it more than just that?

don't quote me on this, but I've heard that in order to get the newer head pipes to fit on the older bikes, you can switch out the oil pan. that'll get you the clearance that you need for the cross under pipe.

I suspect it isn't simple! I haven't come across anyone who has installed such a new set of pipes on an older bike like ours, although it has been done on later models. There are a couple of threads about doing it, but finding such things is like looking for a needle in a haystack!

Your bike doesn't have an oil pan to support the cross-over pipe, also your oil filter may be in the way. If you can borrow them to offer the '15 pipes up to your bike you may get a better idea of the challenge of installing them, otherwise simply look out for a set from up to '08.

Thank you all for the responses, we found a set off of an older bike that worked as supposed to for a good price. Now he is on the hunt for some louder slip ons....lol
