Default Colorado trip

Morning all, I'm leaving with 4 guys on July 21 to Colorado. How difficult will it be for us to find lodging? Obviously we want to stay away from high dollar ski area, but would like to find mom and pop type of motel. We plan on exploring the eastern edge and western slope area with a hopefully short drive to the area. If anybody has recommendations of motels that would be awesome. Thanks

I've never been out there but one way I find hotels is google maps. Zoom in to general area you want to be in. Then type hotels in the search bar and it will put pins where they are. Then click on each and you can get prices reviews and even do street view to see how the parking looks.

We were there at the same time a year ago. You'll need to start looking in early afternoon as rooms fill fast. Very busy this time of year. We always did find accommodations but had to start early. Beautiful riding though! Enjoy!

I've ridden all through Co pretty much staying at BW, you get a decent hotel...Harley discount...free breakfast and biker friendly, I always park under the lit front loading canopy.

Just got back from 8 days in Colorado. Done the trip 12 years in a row. One plan is to stay put in one town central to most riding. That way you won't have to spend a lot of time every day looking for rooms. Lot's of clean comfortable inexpensive places can be found along I-70 from Silverthorne to Eagle which are all mountain towns fairly central to places you'll want to ride to. From there you can get to Glenwood Springs, Leadville, Vail, Independence Pass, Aspen, Mt. Evans, Loveland Pass, Steamboat Springs, etc. Even I-70 is scenic. Especially thru Glenwood Canyon. On my trip we stayed in a really nice Vail lodge for about $140 a night. But you can find decent rooms for as low as $60. Another plan is to do the above for a few days then head south to Durango (not cheap). From there you can ride the Million Dollar Hwy. Go to Telluride, Ouray, and Silverton. Check out in advance what attractions are in and around each town. Hint: Bring rain gear. Storms come up very rapidly.

one of my Pals books 2 rooms for each night...1 500 miles out, 1 200 miles out.

by mid morning he decides which res to cancel.

I usually roll with no plan- BUT get a room by 5 pm...that way you won;t be rolling from place to place at 8 pm scrambling.

I like to camp and usually carry a tent etc.

KOAS have cabins ( byo bedroll) which can usually fit 3 or 4
they have great showers and laundry

or as above, pick a central hub and do dayrides out of there.

being from PHX, i like the 4 corners region- monument valley...and natural bridges and up to moab.

i like riding across southern CO to pagosa hot springs.

have fun

Thanks for the help guys, especially Bingee, we just booked rooms in Eagle for the trip. Really nice to have that done. As all us travelers know looking for rooms anywhere is a bitch, but in the Rockies that is a whole other issue. It looks like Eagle is centrally located so we have options. Now we just have to get out of Illinois, which is a good thing and across Iowa and Nebraska.

Also make note of this: On late Fridays everybody around Denver heads for the mountains. Big time traffic delays going west on I-70. Then on Sunday late afternoons everybody heads back home. Big time traffic delays going east on I-70. So plan ahead.

Thanks again Bingee, I also am looking at Vacation Rental by Owner site. We can get a 1600 sq ft condo 4 bedroom in Eagle or Avon for $1600 for our 5 days, $400 a guy. Probably going that route, many 2-3 or 4 bedrooms available in their off season.
