At a place I worked they used to throw a dozen electrical box covers into the bike parking area at the start of every summer. Folks would just use as neccesary and leave 'em behind. They were too cheap to steal. They're a 4x4 flat piece of galvanized metal -- I imagine the fiver you pay for the Harley puck would buy a lifetime supply of those thingsfrom Home Depot.

That's what I use. It's thin, large surface area, metal, and cheap. Can't beat it.

Check the asphalt; is it full of sand? you'll sink. Is it made of 1/2" rock, you'll likely not need the puck. Use to be the jiffy stands were just a round piece of rod, and they sank easily.[:'(]

The "puck" is always handy, keep it in the pouch in my riders backrest. Riding with the PGR, we sometimes have to park in the grass, or soft material at Graveyards, or the asphalt lots of Funeral Homes.

The air temp really doesn't have much to do with the asphalt being soft as much as the amount of sun shining on it. Thats what heats it up absorbing the suns rays.

I got my puck in the goody bag from the dealer whenI bought the bike, and a few minutes with a drill and some braided twine made it real easy to use.

Toss it down, drag it in place with the twine, set the Jiffy on it, hook other end on clutch. Kick the Jiffy up, grab the puck by the string, rollthe string around the puck and put in the pouch.

The crushed beer/soda canisn't a bad idea till some folks just leave it there as they ride away.

Almost happened to me yesterday.

I stopped to visit a friend at a motorcycle dealership, it was 95 degrees here. I was only inside maybe 20 minutes and came out the the Jiffy stand was buried about 1.5" in the asphalt. I was parked on a slight incline as well.

From now on I carry the $5 H-D coaster in the saddle bag!

What you have to worry about is thoose Geico Road gremlins heating up the area around the Jiffy Stand.

old crushed (top to bottom) favorite refreshment can (mines michelobe and such)
works great.
free after the beer you drank
Plus when you get tired of it or it's looking grungy you can change flavors
and an added benefit is you can recycle it later!
If you ride off and forget it's biodegradeable (ok in about 1000 years)
but it ended up costing you nothing, and maybe some other poor soul will use it too.
