You need to adjust the clutch first, then the barrel adjuster on the cable. That being said, a clutch that engages half way out isn't a properly adjusted clutch. You'll also have a clutch that won't disengage until you've pulled it in half way, with a lot of play in the clutch lever.
I suspect you'll have clutch slippage as a result, as a logical extension thinking it through.

when you ajusted it last time if you backed out the ajuster 1/2,try 3/4 or full turn out.a word of caution, when you approach a full turn out the clutch my not disengage completely.a full turn out it should grab closer to the grip.try 3/4 turn first and see how it works.once you have it where you want it ,then ajust the cable to about 1/8 inch free play in the handle.

A properly adjusted clutch cable will have 1/16 to 1/8 inch of free play when the lever is fully released. Its' purpose is to ensure the clutch fully engages (not hanging because the cable doesn't have any free play & maintains tension on the clutch).
Before adjusting the clutch, the cable adjuster should be set to its' shortest length to give slack on the cable (not the cable housing). Then set the clutch adjustment. Generally 1/2 turn from contact, but within a 3/8 to 5/8 turn from contact should still allow proper, full engagement/disengagement. After the clutch adjustment is set, then go back & set the cable adjuster for that 1/16 to 1/8 inch free play.
BTW - the cable shield adjuster length free play will change slightly between hot cable & cold cable length (more free play hot than cold). Properly adjusted, cable length won't affect clutch engagement/disengagement.
Clutch engagement point on the lever travel relates directly to the clutch adjustment (that nominal 1/2 turn +/- adjustment).
SG-Jay & gipper comments are correct, just not as detailed.
Your choice on where you want it. Service techs at my dealership always set mine to spec, I always went back & set it where I liked it. Finally told them leave the clutch adjustment alone & I didn't have to mess with.
If you go to a model with hydraulic clutch, you learn to adjust to how it works since there's no adjustment.
