When I set my cruise control the green C come on in the gauge but when I let off the throttle it does not stay set. Any ideas on what I should check
I've heard the front brake may be stuck. There's a button that the brake lever contacts. Make sure it's not askew. And look at your brake light and see if it's on. Cruise won't engage if the brake is on

Not sure about the 2001 models, but if you "let off" the throttle by rolling it forward, that is one of several methods to disengage cruise control [others being, apply brake, engage clutch].
Simple deal. Find the idle cable which is on the right side of the neck, just ahead of the tank. Disconnect it. If the problem goes away, you've found the problem.
Two ways to handle. Either futz with the idle cable adjustment until it's fixed. Or do it my way. Leave the cable connectors unplugged. Whatever way you're more comfy with.
I had this happening on my 07 Ultra. I had did the Front Brake Master Cylinder rebuild. Super quick and easy. I have not had this problem again. My guess is that the spring in yours is now weak and will not hold the brake handle away properly. Quick test. While riding. Hold the front break lever out with your fingers and set your cruise control. Check the rear brake the same way just to make sure. If it stays on rebuild.
Three things turn off cruise: front brake switch, rear brake switch, and roll off switch on idle cable. Disconnect each to find the problem. Then there is the handlebar switch itself? If it still doesn't work troubleshoot the module.
