Default Police Seat Adjustment????

I have the shock over coil police seat on my 2014 Limited. I know how to adjust the preload, my question is how do you know its set for you? Preload?

Presently with me sitting on the bike I have about 1/4" gap between the bike frame and the seat's rubber bumpers.

Is that preload about right? I'm finding the seat a little bouncy and have wondered about more preload.
thanks
brian

If you have the preload ("bouncy-ness" and ride height) of the seat where you want it, the rubber bumpers on the seat can also be made shorter by removing them and cutting or grinding the bottom edge (where it makes contact with the frame). The bumpers just pop into and out of the seat frame. This will allow you some more seat travel downwards if the preload you set makes the bumpers too close to the frame.

Ride Safe!

Somewhere, Harley has some guides about how much preload to use based on rider weight. But I think it's much more just about trial and error and rider preference.

yes, some like to bounce around, others want a firmer ride and don;t mind banging into the frame stops once in a while.

I have the old air style and usually about 35 psi at 220#

NOTE
Use a drift and hammer or SPANNER WRENCH (PART NUMBER:HD-94820-75A) to loosen and tighten nuts.
  1. See Figure 1. Loosen jamnut (1).
    NOTE
    • Range of adjustment (3) must be kept within 17.7–27.7 mm (0.7–1.1 in), as measured from the top of the shock absorber to the top of the jamnut. Settings outside this range may result in failure of the suspension components.
    • Factory preset is approximately 21.7 mm (0.9 in) which is suitable for a 90.7 kg (200 lb) person.
  2. Rotate adjustment nut (2) clockwise to compensate for a heavier rider. Each full rotation adjusts for approximately 5.7 kg (12.5 lb) rider weight.
  3. Tighten jamnut.
    NOTE
Seat bracket bumpers provide cushioning under certain riding conditions. If seat system is modified ride comfort may be affected.
