Might have been introduced the following year. When I installed an Avon 140/90 on my earlier bike, with the 1 1/2" belt, I found that I had to trim the rubber belt-guard skirt to get tyre/belt clearance.

I'd be willing to do that but in looking at mine, I have only about 3/16" clearance to the belt itself. Too close I'm guessing.
With the rubber belt guard trimmed I also had just 3/16" clearance, in fact to set my rear wheel alignment I used a 3/16" allen key as a 'feeler' gauge! I ran like that for several years without problems.
