Rick, for me, I think it's fine to have a digital version of the shop manual, but when you're in the actual shop, the only way to go is a paper version. Every single one of my paper manuals gets greasy and dirty, but that's as it should be. I would far rather it get dirty than my tablet or laptop. I don't wear gloves when I work, and if you do...don't admit it tho...then all you have to do is doff them and use the electronic devices.
Also, it's pretty easy to just print out the pages you will need, for shop use. I really like Almost Invicible's suggestion of putting the pdf on your cell phone for use on the road. So his suggestion is a good one, unless you have reservations about maybe feeding into a probable copyright violation...but that's up to you.

I know this thread started out as a question about Throttle by Wire and I don't mean to hijack it but I find the electronic version very handy and it didn't cost much. I have it in on my IPAD, phone & Computer. Great for looking things up, especially when on the road. The format is pdf so I can search for the information I require or have an interest in. When I find the info I need I print it out and take with me to the garage for reference. Can print as many copies as I want.
