Default RE: Winter storage, what do you do?

I recently received my September/October issue of Hog Tales magazine, and here is what they had to say on the subject...(article on page 30)

- Clean and dry all surfaces
- Wax painted surfaces
- Fill fuel tank and add gas storage additive
- Change oil and oil filter
- Clean and charge battery
- Check tire pressure
- Check electrical system
- Cover bike with breathable cover

The reason they give for the oil and filter change is to prevent acids and combustion byproducts from attacking engine parts. They further recommend to run the engine for a few minutes to drive out any moisture and to leave a fresh oil film inside your engine...Hope this helps.

The past couple of years I have put fuel stabalizer in the fuel, Topped the tank off with fresh fuel, changed oil, pull the battery and bring it in the house and thats it.
I do the same. I just make sure to put it in the living room, not the family room, too much traffic
in there.

I always change the oil in the fall. I will drain it out and add new (and filter) in the spring as well.

I use a regular 10W-40 for storage then drain it and refill with Mobil 1. Probably not needed but it makes me feel better.

Do you change all three oils or just the engine oil? The reason I'm asking is because when I put my bike into winter storage I'll probably have about 1,000 miles on the engine, transmission and primary oils.

I will do all three in the fall, then change the motor oil and filter again in the spring. I figure the motor oil has soaked up a lot of junk over the winter and it's cheap insurance to dump it.

The primary oil and tranny oil are OK to leave in until the next scheduled change, IMO.
