RE: Wider rims and tires?
Doc
I used THIS chart as a guide. If you are going to use the MAX suggested on the rear without mods, talk to someone that has ACTUALLY done it because the chart indicated that I could use a MAX of 160mm on my '07 and this may have fit in my swingarm, but I'd woulda had to ditch the belt guard as 150mm ended up being the max without mods for me........contrary to what the charts states for MAX.

And don't try to cheat. I tried an 18x5.5 with a 160 on my 06 and it doesn't fit at all, hits the fender on both sides. A Metz 160 on a 4.5 measures 6.25" so I thought it would clear with 1/8 on each side when I installed it. Problem is the Metz 160 grows to 6.5" on a 5.5 and has NO clearance. Now I'm impatienly waiting for my paint and back ordered clearcoat to come in so I can get my new fender painted and put on the bike so I can ride again. Foolishly sold my old rear wheel before I tried to mount the new one. Going to look good when I get done, just missing a lot of good riding weather now.

As tsglide pointed out if you use a wider rim than what is called for, forthat size tire it will make it wider and shorterand could cause some clearance issues. Do your home work and if in doubt, contact the tire manufacture to make sure you are getting the right size tire for your rim. IIRC Metzler has a nice fitment/tire size chart on their web site.
