Search for the post, but a member here posted just a few weeks ago his hydraulic tensioners failed at a very low milage. The metal pistons under the plastic were exposed they were worn so bad.

What you're probably seeing are threads on the old spring tensioners. They were a nightmare of not checked regularly but the new hydraulics with the roller chain have proven to be dependable and long lasting. As in the previous post, anything mechanical can fail prematurely but the new set up is much much better than the old. The 09 you're looking at is just getting broken in good at 23K.

Here is the post I was referring too. guys bike had less than 50K miles. Look at the pics. Im sure its a rare case as most have reported many thousands of miles on the original tensioner shoes.

I remember reading that thread. I'm not saying it's the cause of the failure but the engine in that thread had a ton of mods done to it and he talks about how hard he rides. The more performance mods, the more reliability becomes questionable. Even his indy builder was surprised and had no clue.

But he only ran it out of oil once
