Piping up
Hey Chris,
Sound is subjective- you've looked at prices of mufflers...some of the guys here are on their 3rd or 4th set of pipes, because they used the internet instead of their own ears.
( and some posters here have a product to sell...)
i really suggest that you take time to see what other guys are using at a bike night kind of event ( doesn;t the museum host events?) and ask guys what they have, how they like them- ask about the ones you dislike as well.
a big question will be what header they have. the stock header w/ catalytic converter changes the sound as much as the muffler choice...many of us run no-cat.
and some guys are happy with the stock mufflers once the cat is gone- that's a bigsaver right there.
decatted headers are on ebay for $150 or so, or a Pal who can weld can do yours- there is a photo tutorial posted on the forums.
the reason for removing the cat is partly sound but also performance- which is a whole other aspect.
I have an 09 model- no cat in the header. My slip ons are screaming eagle fatshots- which are made by supertrapp.
these are easily altered to be loud or quiet as the owner wants, this altering also changes the power characteristics of the motor- a savvy owner can take advantage of the adjustability of this type of pipe

I also have V&H Power Duals, the complete exhaust is a really nice setup.

I think everyone likes their choice of mufflers, V&H 4" turn downs for me.
Everyone says the same thing, too - nice rumble at idle, not too loud cruising, and bark when you get on it... it's the nature of a Harley to sound like that, but rider preference how loud that is ...
If you find a sound you like but it's too loud, you can add Big City Thunder quiet baffles in front of the mufflers. They do a good job of toning down a rowdy exhaust, with the added benefit of returning the low end torque lost with mufflers that are too free-flowing.
