Just did a cam change on my 05 ultra at 45000 miles, my tensioners showed some wear, but nothing like I thought they would be, I guess some are good some are junk. no more worryingabout them anymore , went with gear drive cams.
Replaced my chain driven cams at 59,000 miles (01 Ultra) and the tensioners showed only slight wear. Change my oil every 3,000 miles, 3 quarts H-D 20w-50, 1 quart Lucas Heavy Duty oil stabilizer. H-D premium oil filter. I ride my bike like I stole it. Full throttle from every light, 80 mph on the highway. A buddy babies his 02 Dyna Wide Glide, tensioners went bad causing cam bushing failure at 18,000 miles... The only way to tell, pull the cam cover and look. Only a few bolts and 1 gasket, fairly easy to do.
Ah, yes. I removed the floorboard, loosened the exhaust bolts at the head, and swung the pipe down out of the way. Had to remove the muffler and collector on my V&H Pro Pipe. I guess it depends what exhaust you're running. I got lucky, tightened exhaust back up and no leaks. Point is, it took me about thirty minutes to inspect the condition of the cam chain tensioners. Had I not already bought the gear drives, I wouldn't have changed a thing. ( Glad I did, though, the power I got from the S&S 510g cams is NICE!)
