the outside has nothing to do with the insides...4" is a "looks thing" some think it balances out the look of the bike.
It can give a string horizontal line the balance out the angles and curves- kinda like underlining a sentence
what is important is the size of the core and the baffling.
the header is usually 1.75" many cores are 2"- a larger internal volume in the muffler means that as the gasses flow from the header into the muffler they will slow down, possibly eddy and even reverse direction- all 3 of these adverse for performance
