Default Sprocket change virses cam change for more bottom end

After reading a bit on the 103. Bin wondering if it would be more cost effective to go with a game changer sprocket first? Our to do cams and de cat first. After all i am on a budget. But i want more bottom end then high hp.What do you guys who bin around this stuff for years think?

I would decat, stage 1, tune and reassess.

Yeah that.

I think you'll be surprised at how much the 103HO pulls when opened up a little.

depends on your riding style , 2 up in hill country with no straight roads gearing no 2 ways about it. solo on flat straight roads cams.

And add going 1 tooth less on front/drive pulley to stage-1 mods and the bike will be considerably stronger on lower end ,thats for sure.

I did the 1 tooth smaller drive pulley on a prior bike (1700cc v-twin/no stage 1 mods) i had and just doing that resulted in a noticeable increase off the line & even mid range perf too.

Doing that also resulted in a bit less back & forth shifting around town too.

Only negative would be for example, cruise rpm @ 70 with current drive pulley would be same cruise rpm @ approx 66mph (+ - 1mph) with a new drive pulley with 1 less tooth on it.

But the bike was still just fine cruising @ 70-75mph all day long.

Default Gearing +2

For those who have changed gearing (again depending on riding style totally), including myself on my last two bikes, it is the best least expensive change that puts the torque coming on quicker in the RPM range. Of course there are small trade-offs on the freeway where your rpms to cruise 75-80 will be increased by 200rpm give or take.
On a budget, want quick noticeable change in earlier torque? Change gearing.
For me, I elected to change the trans output sprocket from 32T to 30T which also may require a belt change.

Other upgrades came later.
I should add I've also done the de-cat header and muffler changes, etc. first, which seemed ok, but comparing gearing to that--I choose gearing.
If you add a cam change you should have either a tuning device or have it tuned. The degree in cam profile change WILL affect the ECM timing events.
Just my experience. Good luck.

If you want acceleration performance, why are you screwing around with a sprocket change? Get into that motor and do some performance mods. Go with a bigger cam, head work, tuner and pipes to start.

I personally would not do gear change because when I do get on that long highway section I enjoy the lower rpm and smooth ride at cruising speeds of 70-85 mph. I think a gear change will change that rpm too much at higher speeds. That said, I want more torque but not ready to do major engine work. I just bought this week SE255 cams and a 2-1 supermeg system. I will let you know in a couple weeks how it turns out.

Sounds like a good setup

If you ever have to go into your inner primary......at least go with a 31 tooth pulley. These bikes are geared too high.
