Default Helmets

I'm from a non helmet required state. However, I have several and would like to buy an open face that doesn't have the bobble head effect. I like the appearance of the Shoei RJ models but I understand they have the bobble head look. What do you recommend?

I believe Akoury is the smallest DOT helmet available

I'm guessing by bobble head effect/look you mean size? Any helmet in order to be effective has to be fairly large. Otherwise, it may as well be a hat.

I have an Akoury and like it. No mushroom head!

FWIW, you may want to talk with someone over at Revzilla.com....they carry tons of helmets and can help with fit. Look is up to you. GL.

Yup. Akoury AK88. I've ordered everything from Skid Lid to, you name it, and the Akoury is the one that was the least "mushroom head." They're out of Canada, but there's a dealer in New York. That's where I ordered mine because I thought exchanging for a different size might be easier. Follow the Akoury instructions to see what size, and if you're between an M and an L, go with the M. I also like their quick-release strap. No D rings.

If you want a 3/4 helmet my Bell 500 does NOT make me look like Gazoo. Love it.

I have also looked at the Bell 500 and thought it might be a good fit. I have a number of helmets even though I don't always wear one. I have an extremely light weight "skid lid" that looks great. However after having a heart attack, I feel I need something more substantial. I was comparing the Bell 500 with the Shoei RJ but I saw some comments about the Shoei having a "mushroom" look. Thanks for your feedback...

That's a decent looking helmet. What's the model?
