First 5000 miles on my Road King
First, I want to thank the members here for the great advice before and after the purchase of my 2010 ex-police Road King. Since the purchase I found out that it came from Volusia County, Florida - which is very cool. Sold new at Rossmeyer's in Daytona.
I just returned from a 2000 mile road trip that took me through Memphis, Biloxi, and Birmingham (for the Barber Vintage Motorcycle Festival), and the King didn't miss a beat. In fact, in the first 500 miles (in 3 months), the only problem has been a stripped shifter shaft (the one that the heel/toe arms mount to, not the one that goes into the transmission). That was covered under the extended warranty I bought.
The only things I've done were add new H-D Streamline grips (which are going to be replaced by Iso-Grips) and buy a cop seat (past owner had put on a Sundowner 2-up seat). I ride solo; my wife has a Yamaha FJR1300.
Over the winter the bike is going to get a bunch of work. New intake (Ness or S&S), grips as noted, foot controls, new paint, perhaps some stretched bags, a Flare windshield, and some custom upholstery. And more chrome. Maybe at some point down the road, a Road Glide fairing.
One aspect of the bike that has really impressed me (unexpectedly) are the stock rear shocks. Took me awhile but I got them dialed in right and the ride in the rear is more comfortable than my Valkyrie was with Progressive shocks. I will be doing the Progressive cartridge fork update.
Overall, I have to say that I absolutely love this bike. It's my first Harley and to be honest it took me some persuasion to get an H-D. Now I plan to hang onto this thing for a long time. It has 35000 miles on it and I'm planning on being in the saddle when it turns over 100,000.
