Default Replacing '01 cam chains to the 06-07 roller style

First let me tell you I have an 01 FLHT with 42k and a stage I with rejetted carb. I talked with an indy here in MI about replacing the cam chain tensioners. His suggestion is to go with the 06-07 conversion kit because of all that is included with it;oil pump, cam plate etc. He thinks with this milage it's better to stay with a chain drive. Also he is going to install adjustable pushrods and lifters with an Andrews 21 for arround $1300 with a dyno tune. What do you guys think of the price and cam choice. I only ride solo and only once hit the rev limmit.

I put the S&S 510 Gear Drive cams in my Road Glide last fall at 44k. Do what you want, but if you plan on keeping your bike forever like I do, you would have peace of mind to know that you won't ever have to worry about one of them chain tensioners going bad and really putting a hurt'in on your power plant. Not sure why he said to stay with the chain setup other than to get more money from you down the road. [:'(]
This fall for me,at least 50k will be a 98" kit and R&R cast D port heads.
Typos, I really suk at spelling. [:'(]

Bryan, I'll probably be going the gear route in a year or two. Did you do the work yourself or have your indy do it?

I did my own. I'm and old gear head so I have had a lot of experience working, building race motors, and rebuilds on V-8's and a few straight 6's. When I did the cams that was the first time working on a motorcycle engine, but really it's no different just smaller. I had bought the factory service manual right away when I got my bike. Good directions in there plus S&S supplies very good instruction also. The biggest thing is to make sure you have the specialty tools needed to do the job. With them it was a walk in the park. Without them I think it would not go all that well. I might be up for a road trip.

Thanks. I know many have done their own and several good posts here documenting it. I bought my manual right off, too, and it looks pretty straightforward, but I'll have to get the tools. Maybe I can rent them from a local dealer. Don't go anywhere -- I might be asking questions some day.

I don't understand where the indy is coming from regarding "better to stay with chains due to mileage." I put 26G's in my '00 Road King at 52k miles. I did it myself and had no problems. It was an easy job. My bike pulls like a freight train, even riding two-up with 100 lbs of luggage. Of course the 3:37 gearing on my FI bike helps. (A carbed '01 had 3:15 gearing.)

I wouldn't consider 21's unless I were extremely large and had an extremely large OL on the back all the time. They come on strong on the bottom end, but run out of steam too soon for my tastes.

You da man, Bryan! I'd imagine I can find them here, but who knows, I just might take you up on your offer!

I think he was saying something about cam runout and probable need fora newcam support plate and updated version oil pump that come with the '07 upgrade kit.

I'd go with gear set when changing cam. Have seen the mess the chain makes. That has to go IMO.
