Clutch Plates

Clutch Plates
I have a 2011 Limited Ultra with 62K miles. After my 60K mile service, it was recommended that I do clutch plates soon, so I have everything ordered. (I get it because in 5th gear at 60 mph, I can twist it sorta hard, and the RPMs go up, but the speed doesn't increase.) Anyway, I have a lot of chatter in the front end ---- like, holding 30mph in 3rd gear for awhile, but when the speed increases or RPMs increase, it goes away. 40 to 45 in 4th also. Does that sound like clutch plates?

clutch disks are the ones with friction material- they wear out.
clutch plates or "steels" mate to the disks and will last near forever- unless the clutch is maladjusted and they score, heat up & warp.
warped steels will cause inconsistent transfer of power.
easily checked by eye and a a feeler gauge- lay on a sheet of plate glass and go around the edge with a feeler.
or if heat damaged, discard.
the spring can also wear- in fact everything will wear if the clutch is not holding
the 2007 up clutch is a little fiddly to adjust because of the "EZ Pull" lever- but it can be done.
also random changing of primary fluids can cause engagement problems- friction material absorbs fluid- if the owner changes fluids ( looking for magic cure based on the internet)- the new and old fluids may be incompatible- kinda like a water and oil thing- so you get slippage
but a bad clutch is never going to get better- and worn friction material floating around inside the primary is going to wear everything it touches
