Try idling and pulling the clutch in. If it goes away with the clutch pulled in then, it's probably gear lash.

I thought about primary chain, but with only 3000 miles? Also isn't the tensioner self adjusting? I don't have that inspection cover that older ones had, you have to take the whole primary cover off.

Ok thanks I'll try that, and sorry for all the questions but if it's gear lash it's fine then? I am still trying to get used to all the different noises on this bike. I've only had metrics up to now, loving the Road King but lots to get used to.

yea, aside from the gear lash as long as it sounds like a sewing machine your fine (as far as normal lifter noise).

one thing iv learned over the years is as much noise these things make i never hear people complaining about breaking down on here. 103 runs hot, can make some noise...but it is a good motor.

guys i ride with ride hard, all just got there 50K services done on their 103's....still truckin. food for thought.

The thing with Harley is different years and even different bikes make different sounds. If it's gear lash, and your transmission fluid is at the proper level, then you're fine. My 2016 has more gear lash noise than my 2014 or my 2009 did. I wouldn't think your primary would have issues at 3000 miles and your tensioner is self adjusting. My primary also makes noise, but it's more of a whiring sound of the chain.

Might be an exhaust heat shield touching something, such as the right front footboard, or one could be loose. They use worm type clamps which can be checked for tightness pretty easily.

My money is on the slip on mounting brackets. The spacer dry's out and the vibration at idle sets it off. Next time you hear the noise, get off and put your boot against each of the tail pipes and see if the noise goes away.

That sound will carry forward, bounce of the windshield or fairing and sound like the engine is chirping.

WD40 will work but dry silicone spray will work better.

I just read about this, and it seems like what you're talking about. My bike does the same - only when warmed up, in neutral, clutch. When cold, or clutch in, it goes away. I have 7500 miles on the bike.
