Default decisions

My sister is sick so I am planning on going back to Ia to visit her. My decision is wither to ride the Harley or take the car. Roughly 800 miles & Labor Day weekend. The bike gets about 10mpg's better than the car, & I will more than likely be alone on the trip. I need to do this on a budget, money is tight which leans me towards the bike about $40.00-50.00 difference. The farthest I have ridden in one day was 630 miles & my butt was numb for a few days. So with only 3 days to go 1600 plus the riding around there, not sure I am up for the task. But I really would like to take the bike. Guess I could take an extra day off (with out pay) but that would hurt monetary wise. Thanks for any input.

Just take the car. No extra days off needed and your body won't be in pain for the next two weeks.

Or take the bike. Fug it.

Weather would be the only issue that would keep me from riding it.

I ride everywhere.

But, in a quick turnaround 1600 mile trip with an obligation to be at a job when I got back I'd take the car. Weather, a mechanical, literally anything can make you miss work because of a late return. Even if things go well and you do get back on time; you may be too beat to work depending on your job.

Now I'm not cracking wise here, but I think you have a lot of miles on your bike if I remember correctly. I'm not saying it's not up to the task but doesn't it have well north of 100K miles on it?

First off, sorry your sister is sick and the trip is for that. Take the bike. Time to decompress. Budget...camp at RV sites along the way. I just did 4500mi on a 10 day trip. Worth it. Good luck. Ride free and ride safe!

Thanks for the replies. My Ultra has 117K miles. Not worried about break downs, bike is well kept. Although the shift rod did break on me this past week, fixed now. Weather not a major concern but would suck if it rained the whole time. Don't have enough time to camp, it would have to be a non stop there & back. I am a mechanic, so it could be a rough time when I get back. I have a few days to decide. Plus how busy we are this week at work may come into play. Thanks again for the replies.

Sorry about your sister, hope everything works out.

But if the Vette is the other vehicle, I don't envy you trying to make that decision.

This time I year I would always choose my bike (but I don't own a Vette), but I also have a backrest and highway pegs that let me stretch out.

If theres a choice, always choose the bike. Thats me though. Take a few more stops and stretch and walk around, but ultimately... you know what you can handle and what you can't.
