Another seat thread...
Hey all,
Sorry I know this has beat to death, but The wife isn't happy with her a$$ after a couple hours on the back. To be honest, I wouldn't mind being a little more comfy myself. I had a guy put some gel in it at Sturgis a couple years ago, but I'm not sure it helped any. I have searched all the threads about seats, but it takes forever to look through all that.
I have looked at the Saddlemen seats and I kinda like the Road Sofa model.
Could ya'll tell me your advice, please? Im 6'0" and 200lbs, the wife is 5'4" and 125lbs.
Thanks for any options/opinions.

Mean City Cycles can redo the insides of your OEM seat. Many on here have been happy, including me. The gel stuff really doesn't do much other than dampen vibrations IMO.
Your HD dealer has many seats to try before you buy. Might be worth a try if you like HD seats.
Other than that, it's a crap-shoot (like oil).

IMHO there are three things that contribute to comfort: tyres (some are like wood to ride on!), shocks (which have more affect than is often accepted), seat. I use Avon tyres, for their compliant ride as they smooth out much of the 'noise' that comes up from the road surface; a Corbin dual touring seat for it's support and comfort (must be 15 years old now!); Ohlins shocks, which gave us the greatest improvement in ride comfort.

Thanks for the info and opinions, guys. I didn't think about the Harley seats. I have thought about MCC though. But with him doing both rider and passenger I think it would be about as much as buying a new seat. I could be wrong.
I've heard both good and bad about pretty much all aftermarket seats, so yeah, I think it's a crap-shoot.

When we bought our 14 RK I went through 5 seats (including the stock) over a 3 or 4 week period.
I'm 5'11" (180 lbs) and wife 5'1" (118 lbs)
My past metric bikes, Mustang was always "the seat" hands down.
-Nope, 2 different Mustang seats didnt work on the RK.
-HD Sundowner didnt work. Garbage back support and my wife would slide up into me all the time.
-HD Hammock we only tested on the bike for an hour or two at the dealer on a couple hour trial. (the other seats I actually bought and resold or returned)
We kind of liked the Hammock, I have no problem with it, its much like the seat I am going to recommend you try below. We didnt buy the Hammock on the spot as I was really having a problem with the price vs quality feel of the seat. I have no problem paying the price for something I feel is far and better then the competition but felt this seat was less quality at a higher price.
The RK (touring bikes) are surprisingly crunched up and I really wanted to be a little bit further from the peddles and controls but what we found out in trying the seats was IF you select a seat that sets your further back, your passenger is going to have that much less room, more or less anytime these seats give the rider more room it takes from the passenger.
So the only way for more room is a seat a bit higher
Which led us to this seat.
Saddlemen Explorer Ultimate Comfort.
Looks a bit like a sofa but heck, the touring bikes are massive bikes and it looks fine.
We both love this seat, can sit on it for hours, no teeth rattling bumps etc.
A bonus, the way its designed is that it gives you a lot of true lower back support without a backrest.
I dont consider myself having a bad back, but I can get really uncomfortable with a bad seat or bed mattress and I do not feel nor want a riders backrest, for me personally.
Ok, the downside, not much, first it preserves the room for the passenger since it doesnt push you any further back, it raises you up like the HD Hammock, so you will be a little higher up on the bike vs down in the bike.
I would not recommend this seat for people much less then, lets say as a guess, 5'10" as I find myself at 5'11" depending on wearing shoes or boots not being flat footed at a stop.
We have now had this seat for almost two full years, still works good for us. Our average trips are two hours to the Ocean and 2 to 3 hours to the mountains. In fact just got back from Gatlinburg TN 2 days ago.
With all the above said, just being our 14 RK is so good to us that I need something to play around with, I am thinking about trying the slightly funky looking Saddlemen G-Tech seat, more for the fun of it and maybe just maybe see if it lowers me down an inch. But need to stress, this is just me playing around as our bike as been performing pretty flawlessly and nothing much else I want to do to it.
I see someone mentioned the HD Zepplin, that looks like an interesting seat too.

I've owned Mustang, Corbin, had MCC modified seats and also had a Sundowner. Finally settled on the Hammock and it's better than sitting on my sofa at home. The hammock system inside acts a bit like a suspension which takes away most of the remaining feeling of any bumps that my Works suspension soaks up.
