Default RE: Oil change-all 4 quarts???

07 repair manual says 3.5 qt for oil change with filter. This puts the oil a little over half way between the add and full marks on the dip stick when checked with bike sitting on the kick stand cold. Filling it all the way to the full mark will cause oil to be vented when it gets hot or you're riding hard. Learned this the hard way with an external k&n crank case vent filter routed down by the back of the transmition. Oil all over rear tire on a trip to Sturgis and I had only filled it to the full mark but it was 109 out and I was running hard.

Manual Claims 3.5 with filter. 4 if you open the engine up.

I would be rather be a little low than filled to the max. Easier on the engine, and seals.

Don't know what kind reaction this will get but remember it is better to run
a half a quart low than it is one forth of a quart over.
Saint
remember too, that just because it is not at the full mark, it is not 'low'. so if you are above the 'fill' line, but below the 'full' mark, you are good to go.

Yep, that's what is in my manual. Actually I think it says to add 3.5 then warm-up then check again and top off if necessary.
