That usually means you are running too much oil in the engine. What kind of bike do you have and how much oil did you put in at your last oil change?

Siphon about 1/2 cup of the oil out of the crankcase and you should be good to go.

I have a 09 ultra classic. The oil is not over filled...I check it often. No idea...I guess I'm going to pop over to the dealer and have a chat with them?

Had the same problem on my '11 SG. I stopped topping it off to the full line on the dipstick and just kept it in the safe range. As the previous poster noted a little less oil solves the problem. At least it worked for me.

Three quarts at oil/filter change. No more no less. Thats what took care of it for me. Ridden tens of thousands of miles since and no drips, no problems.

No reason to visit dealer...follow recommended advice here (run approx. 1/2 qt low) and you'll be fine. It's a common issue...

To the OP. Nah, I say go to the dealer. You might spend some money when you get there. They will be grateful. As for your oil issue. You have already read the correct solution.

Hard for me to understand why so many people offer a workaround that may not fix the problem rather than actually explaining the cause of it.

Brent09, the crankcase is vented into the air filter on these bikes. Do you have a "stage 1" air filter? This makes the issue even worse because the factory back plate is removed and is not there to catch all the drips and mist that are coming out of the filter.

Dropping the oil level made no difference at all for me, and is not the correct solution in my opinion.

Rather than dropping the oil level (which is pretty damn important seeing as these bikes are air cooled and already fight high oil temps), many people re-engineer the crankcase vent and run a longer hose away from the factory air intake directing the blowby onto the ground or into a catch can or breather filter. If you have a stage 1 setup, the design of the back plate won't allow this, and you may have to get creative with using two small pieces of copper tubing bent into a U-shape that will direct the blowby toward the throttle body instead of into the air filter. These pieces will have to be secured to the back plate; people normally use something like JB Weld.

Good luck.

I still don't understand how lowering the level of oil in a remote oil bag - oil that is physically pumped to and from the engine - affects the amount of oil collecting in the heads and thus out the breathers during high speed operation.

But for some reason, it works - reportedly anyway.
