How Many Highway Miles in a Day?

Rest between tanks, hydrate very well and ear plugs. No alcohol (can't believe I just said that) good sleep. Anti inflammatory like aleve in the AM ....I take prednisone for a trip like that. Inflammation is a pita. 500-600 miles is doable...get you some good compression socks and underwear and your legs will thank you.

Thanks all for the advice and support. I am definitely doing this. In a departure from my norm, however, I will not be setting goals and making hotel reservations in advance. I have targets, but if I am tired before then, I'll stop. If it takes me 4 days to get there instead of 3, so be it.

I can do 500-600 miles a day, the heat is the thing that makes it tough, especially between 2 and 4pm. I like to leave at daybreak and find a hotel around 4pm. I stop around every 90 minutes or approximately 120 miles.
I like to find hotels with at least one restaurant in walking distance (plenty like that on the interstates). Then I can shower and unpack the bike and walk to dinner. I might gas up before going to bed so I can just leave in the morning without another stop.

500-600 mile days are very do-able, even back-to-back-to-back days. Like said, stop regularly for short breaks. Gas, bathroom, water, go, and keep it to no more than 15 minutes. Long stops are what kill good mileage days.

If you're running the stock seat I recommend an AirHawk seat cushion. It makes a big difference in my comfort factor on long days. If you try one and still have a sore butt after four hours you've got too much air in it. Inflate it to just a little more than flat and you'll love it.

Last weekend we rode about 300 miles a day for 3 days in a row- that was very do-able, we took county roads and areas with lots of twistys, so slower. On the interstate we could have easily done 500. To me weather and riding conditions make a huge difference. We got very nice temps in the 70's, partly cloudy. When riding in 95 degree heat, with high humidity and heavy traffic and lots of road work detours, and such, my willingness to ride is decreased and so is my mental edge, which means it's time to stop riding for the day, so not as many miles.

I have a few long days under my belt - 670 to 700 miles but that was when I was much younger. Now that I am greyed and grizzled my limit is between 400 and 500 miles. As many here have suggested, every 120 miles I stop, take a break for 30 minutes or so. Take breakfast breaks, lunch breaks and drink plenty of fluids. I keep a bottle of Arthritis strength tylenol handy for my goobered up back. Enjoy your trip.
