Default Bike shutting down when put into first gear....please help, no way home..

Hey folks, I have my neighbor just call me from a few miles from home. He's got a 2010 FLHP, 103", 6spd police bike. The bike is bone stock, no mods at all. The bike fires up just fine, but as soon as it's put into first gear it shuts down. It's been running fine all day. He pulled in the clutch when starting and clutch still in when placing into gear. What gives ? Kick stand sensor ? Compensator ? Clutch ? Please help....Thanks.

Sounds to me like a kick stand sensor, but I didn't think they put those on HD's here in the states, but it sure sounds like that is what it is.

I'd guess it's the switch that won't let you start the bike in gear with the clutch out.
Don't know offhand where thats at but if you can find it and unplug it the bike will probably stay running.

Found this on the forum:

NEW Jiffy stand interlock switch
• For HDI, UK and all Police Models meets European regulations
• Motorcycle will not start if jiffy stand is down while rider attempts to start motorcycle in gear
• While running in neutral, if the jiffy stand is not retracted before putting motorcycle in gear, motorcycle will stall
• If jiffy stand drops while rolling in gear, the instruments and tell tale lights will flash and odometer will display message (SidE StAnd)

WOW - So Harley doesn't think Policemen are smart enough to put there stands up before taking off, so they installed a safety, but they don't care about anyone else.

That's what I was thinking of, and my US '07 Ultra Classic has it.

Lightbulb Problem solved!!! Darn rock...

Goo news!!!! Thanks to everyone here first off. He just got the bike home. Yes, like many of you said it was the kick stand sensor .. We're in Canada, not sure if I mentioned it earlier. Anyways, there was a small stone/rock stuck in between the spring and the top of the kick stand where it folds up to the frame . Thus stone didn't allot the kickstand to full retract or return to its proper resting position, thus shutting the bike down when he put it into gear.. Many thanks to all the helpful folks so quick to help out a brother...neighbour is very grateful !!

Thanks again,

Joe

Thank YOU Joe, it is nice that you got back to us. Far to many don't let us know what their problems ended up being.
