Solo seat install 1998 RKC
I'm confused, again! I'm going to install a pre-owned Mustang 2 pc seat set, no hardware came with it. The Classic doesn't come with the stud plate with bolts so I bought one today. I have a feeling that I don't need it.
Do I just need to use the Mustang solo mounting nuts and bolts? Looks like lots of places sell them.

You bought the correct parts. The 98's actually used a weird bolt and plastic retainer that was bad about staying in place when removing the seat. 99 starting using the parts that you bought there. The stud plate goes under the fender and those plastic retainers screw on above the fender to keep the stud plate in place. You just need two seat nuts to finish it off. The Mustang/Harley nuts have a slot in them for the rear seat to slide up on. If you're only running solo, any nuts would work fine until you get the correct ones. Harley part number on what you need is 3638, but they are 12-15 bucks each.

Mike, good morning. The plate with the two studs in your (pic #2) goes under rear fender with studs through the hole (pic #1). The two plastic disc (pic #3) push down on each stud to keep them from falling out until you get the seat and nuts on. I included two of the mustang nuts in a plastic zip lock bag. I am pretty sure that I poked a hole in the bag and zip locked it to the hole in the fender bib. The front metal tang on the seat now slips into the opening in the frame near the gas tank and the seat pushes forward so that the holes on the mounting brackets on the back of the seat will line up with the studs. Next the nuts. The bib was made to slip over the top of the nuts by the seat and then gets the old seat bolt out where you removed the seat for the two up seat. Bib has velcro on bottom underneath if you want to put a piece on bike, but I never needed to, it stayed fine. Hope this helps, but if you need any more discussion give me a call, I PM'd my cell. Ride safe!

The first pic below is what it will look like with the Harley bracket (from pics above) installed. Second pic shows the nuts that will be used over the 2 mounting tabs on the rider seat. The passenger seat slides into these chrome nuts and secured with rear screw. The chrome nuts are part # 78032 from Mustang seats or 3638 from HD. Can buy them at other online retailers also. Mustang seats part # 78028 are bolts that might possibly be used instead of the Harley 59174-99 bracket, need to verify with them.

No, I don't have pics yet. It's 123 degrees in the garage today.
