Depends. If I'm just puttering around in fair weather, I might take them down to the bars or so.

But, if I know I've got some hard riding coming up, I'll go ahead and change them well before then. I do not like borrowing trouble.

I'll also go ahead and change them when they develop that worn out feel, regardless of what the tread depth is.

Change a motorcycle tire by the time it reaches 2/32, even if uneven wear.
General rules regarding motorcycle tires.
2/32" minimum legal, but in rain 4/32" is minimum. Most tire gauges show warning (Yellow) at 6/32"
2/32 - To Lincolns head on a penny
4/32 - To Lincolns hair/forehead line on a penny
6/32" - To Linclons eyebrow on a penny.

Typically, I'll ride mine into the 3/32" range, but before a major trip, 4/32" is my minimum as we ride rain or shine. It is not unusual to wear 1/32" or more off in 3000 miles, especially when hot or loaded for travel or if the roads call to you to ride aggressively.

With good tires, proper air pressure and decent brakes, your entire riding experience will be enhanced. I don't use the wear bars, I am rich enough to have a penny.

The Tire And Wheel Warranty will not cover incidents if tread depth is less than 3/32", therefore I go to new rubber at 3/32" tread, which generally is almost to the bar.
Besides, my Granddaddy many years ago used to say "Ride on good rubber, and drink good liquor and you'll be around a good long while, son".

The rear was barely showing the wear bars and the front still had plenty of tread left. Changed them both at the same time, along with new wheels.

I like your granddaddy, but I had to learn these rules the hard way. It would have been nice to have been told by someone I respected at an earlier age. I only recently took this to heart, good whisky always, but I've done my time on poor rubber. No more.
