Default 2009 Ultra Classic elect problems

Ok I'm looking for some ideas about my ride. I have a 2009 Ultra classic when i am in 6th gear the gear light will blink on and off kicking off the cruise control. Also the neutral light flickers when it should be off, plus starting tonight the security light came on. Any ideas?

I just had a similar problem on my 09. It wound up being some wires had rubbed bare and were shorting to ground occasionally. Check the wires coming out from the fairing for abrasion where they go past the frame, before they go into the wiring gutter under the fuel tank.

I have a friend with a 2012 Ultra Limited and has some wired dash light issues. Once he found he could not air up his rear shocks he removed the seat and found a rodent had done some extensive chewing on wires, the bottom of the seat, and the air lines.

Good grief! At least that emphasises the benefit of taking a look to see if there is anything obvious!

Rees107, mention of battery is a good one. If your bike is still on it's original one, which is not unusual, it may be on it's way out. There are a couple of Stickies in the Tech Electrical section on checking your charging circuit, which includes the battery. It is well worth following them, to see if anything is going on in that area. You will need a multimeter.

Those sound low. Have you followed the tips in those Stickies and used a multimeter? If the voltage continues to climb with increasing revs, say to 15v at 3,000rpm etc, then you probably have a duff regulator. Voltage should level out at 14.6 or there abouts, lower than 2,000rpm. Don't rely on your bike's voltmeter, it isn't accurate enough!

Those do sound low.
Resting voltage on a fully charged battery should be 12.6V when read with a DVM.
Anything above 1k rpm should read 14.2v I believe. Could be a few 10ths higher but above 14v for sure.
You need to do a full charging system check along with a good visual check for loose, damaged or coroded wires and connections. Remember that wires all have two ends so look closely especially on the high power wires.
These bikes can be very sensitive to voltages, spikes and shorts so you must be sure the charging system is right before looking to much further.

The 2010 Elect. Diagnostic Manual states at 3,000 rpm any voltage between 13 and 15.5 is normal.
