Hey all -

OP here. Thanks again for the replies.

I'm going to refill with the 75/140 again. That weight has been running fine since the dealer 1,000 mile service. From the replies, I'm guessing either 75/90 or 75/140 is fine in these trannys.

Regards

Hard to believe 140 is too heavy when people have had such good luck redline shock proof in the tranny. The red line flows like molasses.
Maybe they had seal problems tough long term...?
Reline V-Twin trans with shockproof viscosity is almost exactly like their 75-140 gear oil. I don't care what they say, the numbers don't lie.

2016: YEAR OF THE OIL THREAD!!

Golden Spectro Heavy Duty Platinum 6-Speed Transmission is 75W-140
so... I use Mobil 1 75W-140 Gear Oil. Gear oil in a gear box, motor oil in a motor.

Not to bait another oil debate here, but I was curious of everyone's opinion regarding using 75/90 vs 75/140 weight synthetic gear oil in a '14 RK.

I do my own maintenance if possible, however I had the dealer do the initial 1,000 mile service and they installed 75/140 syn gear oil in the tranny.

I live in eastern PA...summers get hot/humid. Is 75/140 a better alternative than 75/90?? I plan on a 10K tranny gear oil change interval going forward.

Thanks all..
Use this viscosity graph and decide for yourself.

You can see by the graph 75-90 puts your in the favorable 50w range.

I've used both and couldn't tell a difference. So since I change mine at least once a year, I go with the 75w/90.
Same here. 100,816 miles and no issues.

Default Transmission oil

Here is what I use in my 012' Ultra. =

Heavy Duty Platinum Full Synthetic 6 speed Transmission Lube
Designed by Spectro in response to complaints from Harley owners about the great but noisy new 6-speed transmission, this full synthetic provides ultimate lubrication protection. Formulated to significantly reduce gear noise and provide easier, smoother shifting, this SAE 75w140 formulation eases shifting even when cold. High loads and extreme heat do not affect the oil, so it performs well when pushed hard and long. A.P.I. GL-5 rated

There is no question that a 140 weight gear lube is make for a quieter transmission but I have always felt it was too thick for these lightweight Harley transmissions. Lighter viscosity will lube better in a 6 speed tranny.
Again, it is all about personal preference. Anything will work ok for the first 24 months, or until the warranty is over. After that you need a good quality lube that will provide years of service. I think some of the dealers make bad recommendations to their new bike customers by recommending questionable products.
Just use what you feel comfortable with. There is no "best or worst". Some are better suited than others though. Read your manual.

And after you read that manual, let me know what it says for transmission fluid specifications.

I am going to switch to this on my next change. I really do not hear anything bad about the Spectro product line. I used it for years on my 2000 Classic no problems.

Like I stated before these heavy lubes became popular because of the straight cut 5th gear in the 09 models. They would whine pretty good to the point that it irritated a lot of folks so the answer was to use the heavier lubes. They fixed that in 2010 and up so there is really no benefit going that heavy.
