Default Removing the oil filter

Just a quick one here,....My dealer did my 15K check-up and did the oil change at the same time,....(part of the service),...anyways when they put the oil filter on they put on a regular black stock filter instead of the chrome one,....They told me they were outta stock.
So hereI am with a black filter and a chromed out engine...(Boo-F%$&*^@ Hoo...[:@]) Anyway rather than run her 100 miles round trip through the Florida Love Bugs to have them do it I am wanting to just pull the filter off and put the chrome one on.....
How much oil am I going to loose when I unscrew the filter to replace it? And how big of a mess am I going to have? I have a 2004 EGC

You shouldn't lose but what is in the filter if much since it's not running and all of your oil is in the oil pan below.
As far as making a mess, do it like you would do a normal filter change.
I say go for it. I removed the drain pan plug on my Ultra to insert a sensor, and lost about a mouthful of oil.

I know most car oil filters hold about A 1/2 A quart .
When you pick up your fiter , Buy A quart of oil also .
So pop on the new Chrome filter , And start it for A few seconds .
And check the level.
And top off . On my bike , I spray it off with brake clean .

Bleck!!![:'(] didn't you have an oil pan to use?

He probably installed an oil temperature sensor in the oil pan for an oil temperature gauge. Alot of us have done that and tossed out the POS air temp gauge.

You'll need 1 qt of the SAME brand and weight as they put in and your chrome filter. "Prep" the new filter by filling it 1/2 way or so with oil (NOT FULL) and oil the sealing ring. Rags under the old filter, unscrew and do a quick swap out, tighten good and hand tight only, clean up the mess, start it up, warm it up, check for leaks and then check the oil level, adjust as required. 15 minutes max. Does the sensor for the Harley oil temp gauge replace the oil pan drain plug?

the sensor for the HD oil temp gauge is a clusterfuk . Most members decide to ignore the HD installation instructions and mount it like the McKuen guage.. in the oil pan. There is a "spare" plug in the pan next to the oil drain you can put it into. It might need a brass adapter I'm not sure but someone will be along any second to confirm or correct me. The postings on the HD one have never been favorable in regards to cutting in the sensor into an oil line.

As for the oil filter, I have never changed my oil... helps to have a friend that is a HD indy shop, but I have read that cutting a 2 liter soda bottle up so it fits under the filter so the oil will fall into the bottle and run down thru the top and into a pan works. YMMV.

I have a brand new Ultra. You cannot notice the chrome filter enough to justify the price. I changed just the engine oil at 400 miles and black it is and black it will stay.

A little tip for you, before you remove the filter, cut off the bottom of a 2 liter soda bottle and leave the lid screwed on. When you pull the filter have the cut soda bottle under it so whatever oil leaks out is caught in the bottle. No mess at all. Dont forget to put a little oil on the filter gasket before installing it. Let us know how it turns out.
