Default What causes a stator to go bad?

I replaced the original one about two years ago and the "new" one is needing to be replaced. I have 65k miles on the bike, it is an 09. I did upgrade to a 107 before the first replacement if that matters.

Thanks

Yep - or a bad voltage regulator.

All the above and a bad battery and bad ground. Anything that makes it work harder.

Heat. The stator has been the weak link on my bike. 143k and I'm on my 4th stator. I've tried different fluids to reduce the heat and I think best has been formula +.

all of the above. heat ,crappy wiring (shorts), cheap parts, bad battery or voltage regulator. loose wiring (bad grounds). i've seen people with wires just twisted together over the years and they wonder why their **** goes out. that being said, old age and alot of use takes it's toll over time. it sure seems the newer stuff doesn't hold up as well as the older stuff.

Heat and load added to any little flaw in the coating on the windings and you've got a fried stator.

All of the above, plus poor manufacturing. Look at the photo, you see some of the winding are tight, some loose, etcc. - this makes for hot spots, and then burnout.

With that said, I don't know who makes quality stators.

www.cycleelectricinc.com

Get the whole kit(stator/rotor/regulator) and change your primary fluid every 5000 miles or twice a year.

At the risk of not being politically correct in the eyes of all the "Kool Aid" drinkers here, I am thinking that the No. 1 reason that so many stators fail on newer bikes is that the MOCO buys the cheapest components that they can source in the hope that they will last 24 months before they croak. My bet would be that they have a supplier in China for stators but I don't know that for a fact, just a guess on my part.
