2016 Road King - First long-ish ride
So, a little history first. I've been riding since 1973. First ride was on a Honda 450 scrambler. Rode it in a parking lot... right into the back bumper of a new Camaro. I was hooked. Owned many bikes over the years, both metric and HD. My first HD was an AMF Sportster. Carried tools with me bungee'd to the seat so I could put parts on that kept falling off, but I loved the bike.
More recently I owned a 2003 E-Glide Classic. Bought it off the floor and put 50k miles on it in three years when I lived in Georgia. Loved it too.
Got transferred to Denver, CO in 2007. Bought a Honda ST1300 while on a business trip in Dover, DE. Rode it home... in November. Got my iron butt cert on that bike.
Bought a 2004 Heritage Classic because my wife wouldn't ride the Honda with me. Bought the Heritage used and the guy who bought it new had every geegaw piece of Chrome that the motor company sold for it. Didn't really care for the bike that much. Not sure why, just didn't.
Bought a KLR 650. Rode it on trails in the mountains. Wrecked it and shattered my knee. Sold all three bikes, telling myself I was getting too old to ride.
So here I am today with a brand new King. I put a backrest on it for my wife, and I also put SE Street Cannons on it after work yesterday. Love the sound.
Today we took the bike out for 200 miles. Horrendous winds out of the south. My first impression of this bike is "Why didn't they build this thing years ago?" Outstanding handling. It felt like a locomotive on rails, and actually handles sweepers and tight curves without wallowing around on me. The new engine is a great change over the TC 88 I had in my Glide and the Heritage, but at this elevation I always feel like I need (WANT) more power.
Long story already, so to make it a bit shorter, this is the first bike of any kind that I don't have any complaints about and, even after that combative wind all day, I put the kickstand down with a smile on my face when it was all over.
Congrats Harley. Great bike.
