The I on the end determines that it is fuel injected. So a FLHP is carbed and FLHPI is fuel injected.

the late evo is a fine motor- but the whole thing is 19 years old- & who knows how well it's been taken care of...

The EVO for the most part was no power house stock but a good engine. I still have my 1996 EVO still enjoy it and ride it. EVO engine does not increase or decrease the value . That is what they had in them all. The EVO's day has come and gone but you can still get parts. They can be made to put out fair power with cam and head work.
If I was looking of a 97 EVO, I would want a carb not fuel injected.
If you want it make sure you don't over pay and then enjoy it. And look up how to clean lifter screen.

Many parts from the 97-07 are compatible as the frames were the same. I put 130,000 miles on my 98 Road King and enjoyed every one of them. Lots of deals on used bikes nowadays. Just make sure you know what you are getting and an idea of the value going into the deal.

Like smitty901 said, the EVO is no powerhouse, but it is a good reliable engine. Some folks seem to prefer the EVO over the early T/C 88's (probably due to the cam chain tensioner issue) and I had a H-D salesman in a TX dealership tell me that a lot of used bike buyers want EVO's

I had an earlier ('87 ) model EVO and after 25,000 or so miles it developed a cylinder base gasket leak. No oil leaked but it did effect the engine idle and I had to increase the size of the idle jet (carbed engine). An injected engine with a similar could probably be tuned to compensate for this problem.
I have a '98 EVO with no issues but it has less than 10,000 miles on it and it's a "garage queen" so that's all I can offer.
If the bike you're looking at starts, idles and runs OK, and it doesn't smoke you will probably get a lot of miles out of it.

Minor seeping at base gasket was often caused by not allowing the engine to warm up before rolling on hard. I know many that put 100K on EVO engines. My 1996 is still a rider and has a side car on it. It will be with us until I am dead, the second son gets it.

Ok guys thanks for all the help up to this point. Let me ask a little more if you don't mind. I hear you guys saying to increase my knowledge to not over pay. Here is the specs I have on the bike.
97 police edition road king
1340 EVO with 65,000 on it
screaming eagle carb
police edition tuning and cam
2 into one exhaust

He is asking 8,000 pretty sure I can get it for 6,000 however we were drinking when he said that. Blue book seems to be around 5 but searching online they are listed from around 5,000 up to 12,000.

My overall plan is to pick this one up if the deal is right and keep it for two years and at that time I should be looking for something new. So don't want to take it in the shorts down the road as well.
So with all that being said what is everyone's thoughts on what I should pay. Not all that mechanically inclined so anything I need to be aware of when I go look tip me off on that. Thank you everyone really appreciate the help.

Also if there is any where you can send me to read up on things would be helpful as well. I'm having trouble finding much out there. Later
Ozzy

High on price. A police bike will bring a lower price. If the bike looks real good and I mean Good. some where near the low end of NADA book
