Cloce call, almost dropped - Warning!

A rider up this way killed a few years ago when his jiffy stand dropped. If I remember right he was taking a very low speed left turn at an intersection and when it dropped it threw him off the high side. I'm not sure of the spring broke or the bolt dropped out, but in any case he's no longer with us.

It would be an excellent video, if he hadn't put the spring on backwards, in his final assembly. 03 Sedona Orange pointed that out in my thread this summer:

The guy put the spring back on incorrectly on the kickstand. Maybe he needs to check out the service manual or at least follow his own rule about making sure you put parts back the same way you remove them. At about 30 seconds into the video, look at how the spring is located on the kickstand & it will be seen several times after that. At about 6:20 watch how he reinstalled the spring. That is not the correct way. As per my 2011 HD service manual: Verify that the end of the spring enters hole from front of leg weldment. If the end of the spring enters hole from rear of weldment, spring coil will rub on leg when exercised.

I recently replaced my spring. It was stretched after 118,000 miles of daily commuting. The stand would was not pulling tight to the frame and would occasionally drag in tight left turns. Now I'm going to have to go out and look and make sure I put in in correctly.
I have had one get bent after bottoming out, the hook fell out and the stand dropped. Thankfully I wasn't alone and my riding buddy was able to get it hooked back in while I sat on the bike to hold it up. Continued the ride but scared to death it would fall out again going down the road. Luckily it made it home.
We could load up our saddle bags with spare parts but I did carry an extra spring for a long time. I think it was $8.00
