Strapping cargo to saddlebags

on my old '95, I had the racks on top of the saddlebags- my tent was small enough that I could attach to that rack...But I ended up putting it on top of the tourpak rack.
mine was a small 1 man, with collapsing poles so maybe only 30" long.
with it on the tourpak I could more easily open the saddlebags through the day...it's the green bag in the pic below:

I've left home a couple of times looking like Uncle Jed (Beverly Hillbillies ). Careful positioning and secure tie downs will minimize problems. If you're concerned with damage to painted surfaces use some duct tape ( stuck to the compromised areas ) to ensure that there won't be problems. It's easily removed and the glue won't have have any after-effects.

I don't always carry a tent, but when I do, I carry it on my Tour Pak rack

We were in South Africa recently and saw quite a few Harleys and lots of BMW GS owners, looking as if they were halfway through a global tour - but probably going to the local shops!

You remind me of my friend who rides his GS Adventure to the coffee shop with his tent strapped on the bike and his map inserted into the map pocket on the back of his BMW jacket, for all to see.
