RE: What kind of radio ???
I got a cheapo JVC with a detachable face plate... AM/FM/CD that does MP3, 40watts/chan, only running 2 fairing mounted Sony XPLOD speakers (39 bucks @bestbuy) mounted in a Hawg-Wired bezel and cradle kit. I can hear it just fine at 80 MPH wih a full face helmet on.
I have never needed the bar controls myself, YMMV

For mounting the radio, Hawg-wired and Biketronics make mounting kits. I used the Biketronics which cost $50 and makes for a neat, recessed installation. I also bought from Biketronics a plastic, press fit splash guard for use if the bike will get heavy rain.
You can use any brand name headunit, preferably with a detachable face. I have a Sony GT510 and used it without handlebar controls for over a year until I got some handlebar controls for free and added the Biketronics interface unit ($150) to now have handlebar controls. If you think you might add handlebar controls, go with a Sony since the Biketronics interface unit is designed for Sony headunits. I don't know if the Hawg-wired interface is brand specific for headunit compatibility.
I also use the Sony XPLOD 4-way speakers ($35 at Wal-Mart) and they work well at 80 mph with Rinehart TD's.
You will also need to purchase HD speaker adapters that fit between the speakers and the inner fairing. I think they were about $14 a piece.
An antenna mounted inside the fairing is also needed, unless you want to run an antenna at the rear of the bike,if you want to listen to the radio. Dakota Digital makes a powered antenna (about $80) but generic equivalents are available at auto audio shops for about $45, and others have mixed results with TuneTrapper and other units available at auto parts stores.

RE: What kind of radio ???
I just got done installing a Sony marine stereo in my Electra Glide Standard. I made my own mounting bracket and installed a SWI-PS universal steering wheel control interface for the handlebar controls. I didn't like the white faceplate and ended up painting itblack. Also the interface module doesn't have the automatic volume control for your speed. If I had to do it all over again I think I would just get the install kit from E-Glidegoodies.com. Also be sure to get the handle bar controls well worth it.
SONY GTX-50M STEREO $141
SWI-PS $ 43
HARLEY ANTENNA $ 34
FACEPLATE ADAPTER$11
J&M SPEAKERS $ 94
TOTAL $323

RE: What kind of radio ???
Jay: Did the J & M speakers not require use of the HD Speaker adapters? Or does an EG Standard come with the speaker adapters? I didn't see the adapters listed on your parts breakdown and installed them with my speakers because the HD parts book for the '04 EG shows them.

RE: What kind of radio ???
I went with www.biketronics.com with hogtunes speakers and xm. I have been very happy with it since i've installed it last september on my e-glide standard. Good service and very easy to install.

RE: What kind of radio ???
Since you don't have handlebar controls look at radios with large buttons or even *****. You don't need to be diverting your eyes from the road because you hit the wrong button. Consider a marine style radio or something that will accommodate a wet weather cover. Car radios are cheap depending on what your after. My radio (not cheap) was $1200 two years ago and can be scored for around $600-$800 now. If the latest and greatest doesn't matter you'll make out OK.
